An Interview with Alicia Golan

We are fortunate at BIUS, Inc. to have case managers who receive compliments from our professional staff. Our underwriters even frequently ask for their advice. One might expect this from a bunch of rookies, but our underwriters average 21 years in their field. How can one explain this?

The answer is Alicia Golan, our vice president of administration. Alicia has worked diligently to earn the respect of everyone; her staff, our underwriters, senior management, and most importantly, our clients. Perhaps her degree in psychology helps maintain this healthy symbiotic relationship.

Alicia Golan has been with BIUS since our inception in 1998. Although her major was psychology, she grew up in New York City within an “underwriting family”. As she puts it, “Insurance underwriting is in my blood.”

What are your duties?

“I interact with our underwriters. I assign them work and ensure their output meets the client’s specifications. Also, I interface with our clients. My responsibilities include learning their processes and, in turn, instructing our underwriters and case managers.”

How do you ensure your underwriters’ work is completed on time?

“I monitor workflow throughout the day. So, I immediately know when we are running behind. I can then proactively work with the underwriters to remove obstacles and meet their deadlines. I also review their schedule regularly to check their availability so I can distribute work effectively.”

What do you like best about your job?

“Wow. I enjoy so many things. I love the versatility... working with different companies and different rules. For example, some send us work by paper while others send electronic files. This allows me to multi-task. Patrick empowers me to be as flexible as I need to be. As a result, I am me to meet the exact needs of every client”

“I love working with our clients. They always respond so openly to my input on improving their business. I feel heartened when they are willing to follow my suggestions.”

“Our underwriters are also a nice group of people. They always act respectful and make it easy for me. I enjoy their enthusiasm. You see, in our company, underwriters must also multi-task. They need to adapt to different companies’ rules and guidelines. Our staff are professional and confident, and relish the challenge of difficult cases.”

Alicia, you have a reputation for being so organized that you can locate files that are in the offices of your clients. Is this true?

“Hey, I’m not superwoman! But yes, on several occasions, we have told clients the correct location, within their company, of files we have returned to them. Our tracking system allows us to determine where their files are.”
